The work of the Institute for Studies of the Recent Past promotes better public understanding, particularly among the younger generation, of the long-lasting negative impact of the communist regime on present-day Bulgarian society. Within 15 months, the Institute’s team will produce three publications on topics examined by the scholarly and public programs it has pursued since its inception. It will also host a closing public debate titled “Intellectuals, Communism, and Democracy,” bringing together a wide circle of college students and professors, researchers, political scientists, economists, and civil society activists to discuss the findings of the Institute and the future steps in the study of the recent past in Bulgaria.
