Dear Friends,
There is a place in northwestern Bulgaria we keep coming back to.
Chiprovtsi is a small mountain town, but it does not fit neatly into a single visit. The mountains are close, carpet patterns seem to peek out from everywhere—from the museum, the souvenirs, the conversations—and the local speech has such a lively, distinctive music that you find yourself wanting to listen a little longer.
Chiprovtsi is famous for its carpets, and rightly so. Few Bulgarian traditions are as recognizable around the world, and in 2014 Chiprovtsi carpet weaving was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
But the town is not living on past glory alone. The Northwest Bike Tour starts and finishes here, family businesses welcome guests as their own, and local people keep finding new ways to show why this corner of Bulgaria is worth the trip.
That is why this month we are taking you to Chiprovtsi: to the museum on the hill, to the carpets that draw people from across the world, to the families keeping the craft alive, and to entrepreneurs like Tsvetomir Stefanov of Chiprovsko Pivo, who has turned beer into a livelihood for his family, a pleasure for guests, and one more reason to discover Chiprovtsi.
And when you get there, do not rush. Leave time for a conversation with locals, a forest trail above town, the view from Zhar Hut, and mushroom jam, which sounds like a joke until you taste it.
Chiprovtsi has a long memory and a very lively present. Take the detour. You will understand why we keep returning.

How One Boy's Curiosity Became Chiprovsko Pivo
Tsvetomir Stefanov was only 17 when he decided his homebrewing experiments could become more than a hobby. Today, Chiprovsko Pivo is a family business with a guesthouse, brewery tours, and a clear purpose: to create a livelihood in a place many young people leave behind. It is a story about entrepreneurship, but also about love for one’s hometown—the kind that does not remain a feeling, but becomes action.
