Dear Friends,

Not many foreigners can casually drop a word like тарапана into a conversation in Bulgarian. Our new president and CEO, Rod Moore, is one of them.

After nearly four decades of coming to Bulgaria, including three diplomatic postings here, Rod knows the country unusually well. But one of the things we appreciate most about him is his insistence that he still has a lot to learn. His plan is to begin by listening.

That seems like a good way to start a new chapter.

For more than a decade, Nancy Schiller has led the America for Bulgaria Foundation with extraordinary warmth and determination. She has helped build relationships that reach far beyond our office, connecting people who might otherwise never have crossed paths and supporting ideas that have made a real difference in communities across Bulgaria.

Now Rod takes the helm, and we carry those relationships forward.

From our perspective as a team, that's what continuity looks like. It doesn't mean doing everything exactly as before. It means staying committed to the people we work with, remaining open to new ideas, and recognizing that making Bulgaria a better place to build a life takes far more than any one organization.

This issue is a chance to hear from both Nancy and Rod, in their own words. We have recorded conversations with each of them about their connection to Bulgaria, what they have learned along the way, and what comes next.

You can watch the interviews or settle in and read them. We hope you will come away feeling, as we do, that there is a great deal to look forward to.

Rod Moore: The Best Place to Start Is by Listening

After nearly four decades of coming to Bulgaria, Rod Moore knows there is always more to discover, even in a country that feels like home. As the America for Bulgaria Foundation's new president and CEO, he is eager to get beyond the familiar, meet people on their own terms, and understand the country through their experiences.

Nancy Schiller: I Am Proud of the Community We've Developed

When Nancy Schiller first arrived in Bulgaria in 1992, she expected her assignment to last just three years. Nearly 35 years later, Bulgaria has become her second home, and she has helped build a community of people who share a desire to make the country a better place. Now Nancy is looking forward to some well-deserved time with her family and two grandchildren. But retirement doesn't mean goodbye. It's simply “See you soon!”
