The High School Student Institute in Mathematics and Informatics (HSSIMI) has a successful track record of attracting and motivating Bulgarian high school students to engage in inquiry-based learning in the fields of mathematics and informatics by involving them in an intensive year-round program. Under the mentorship of scientists, university professors, and teachers, students develop scientific projects over the course of the academic year. Students report their progress and defend their findings at regular scientific conferences. A three-week summer research school gives students the opportunity to engage in intensive workshops and to collaborate with their mentors and teams on scientific projects. HSSIMI also selects two students to represent Bulgaria at the prestigious six-week Research Science Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
