A Delicious Steak Is Just a Click Away!

If you want to order a juicy, high-quality steak made in Bulgaria, not one imported from Argentina and frozen and thawed countless times, the meat has to come from a special breed. In other words, the animal’s breeding pedigree is crucial for a good steak.

How do you ensure a good pedigree? Some animal traits are visible to the naked eye, but not all. Breeders around the globe rely on animal pedigree statistics, and the more data they have available (on breed, genetic features, weight gain potential, etc.), the more certain they can be of an animal’s characteristics—which, in the end, will translate in higher-quality meat for consumers.

The prospects of beef breeding in Bulgaria are promising, although the sector is still in its infancy. Bulgarian cattle breeding has a long tradition, global demand for meat is increasing, and the country is close to Turkey, one of the biggest beef consumers. This is why the America for Bulgaria Foundation supports the initiative of the Association of Beef Breeders in Bulgaria to create a sophisticated software system for storing and analyzing beef cattle data in the country. Tracking pedigree will be possible in a matter of seconds, and delicious, top-quality steaks will find a place on Bulgarian tables very soon.

The system established a national database of purebreds and crossbreeds, making it possible to measure, compare, and analyze the genetic and economic characteristics of beef cattle herds in Bulgaria. It currently tracks the three most economically significant meat breeds in the country, Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, and Limousin. In the future, it will be enhanced to include other breeds as well. The database will be compatible with international breeding assessment models, which will enable relevant and accurate comparisons with beef breeding practices in other countries. This is an important prerequisite for the development of competitive beef breeding in Bulgaria.
