ABF Board Director Melanie Kirkpatrick Elected to Key Dow Jones Oversight Committee

Melanie Kirkpatrick

Melanie Kirkpatrick, a member of the Board of Directors of the America for Bulgaria Foundation, has been elected to the Dow Jones Special Committee. The committee is an independent body tasked with safeguarding the editorial independence of The Wall Street Journal, one of the world’s leading newspapers, and its parent company, Dow Jones, a global news and financial information provider.

The five-person committee plays a quiet but essential role in protecting one of the most influential voices in global journalism. Among its responsibilities is approving the appointments of the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Page Editor, positions that shape how millions of readers understand business, politics, and public life.

Kirkpatrick brings to this role a career deeply rooted in the Journal itself. She spent nearly three decades at The Wall Street Journal, where she held senior editorial positions, including op-ed editor, member of the editorial board, and deputy editor of the editorial pages. Today, she continues to contribute commentary to the paper.

She is also the author of three books exploring American identity and global human stories, including Escape from North Korea: The Untold Story of Asia’s Underground Railroad, Thanksgiving: The Holiday at the Heart of the American Experience, and Lady Editor: Sarah Josepha Hale and the Making of the Modern American Woman. Her work has earned her the Mary Morgan Hewett Award for Women in Journalism, recognizing her lasting impact and dedication to the profession.

Beyond journalism, Kirkpatrick is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and serves on advisory and governance boards across the United States, including the America for Bulgaria Foundation.

Her election to the Dow Jones Special Committee feels both fitting and consequential, a continuation of a career devoted to rigorous reporting, thoughtful commentary, and the enduring principle that a free press depends on independence and integrity.

Congratulations to Melanie Kirkpatrick on this well-deserved recognition.
