Christmas Without A Christmas Meal?

Over a million and a half Bulgarian citizens live in poverty and experience food shortages. At the same time, over 670,000 tons of food are wasted in Bulgaria – enough to feed all impoverished people in the country for over a year. It would be perfect if there was neither food loss, nor hungry people in Bulgaria, wouldn’t it?

The answer to the above question lies in the Bulgarian Food Bank – the first organization in the country that gathers, stores and gives away donated staple foods to those in need. Thus, BFB saves excess, but safe to use food that would otherwise be lost. A network of partners across the country help BFB rations reach tens of thousands of Bulgarians who cannot afford to buy quality food, or have been victims of natural disasters, calamities or crises.

The food supplied by BFB is of good quality and safe to eat. It is taken off supermarket shelves because it has been produced in excess, has lost its market appeal, or its packaging has been deformed during shipment.

Storing, processing and distributing over a ton of good quality food a day, the Bulgarian Food Bank is the largest and most efficient nutrition assistance provider in the country.

BFB relies exclusively on donations, goodwill gestures, voluntary labor and free logistic services for its day-to-day functioning. Many storehouse owners and managers, for instance, provide some of their storage space to the food bank and its partners for free, while carriers agree to transport the food rations across the country free of charge.

Every Bulgarian Lev donated to BFB provides ten food rations to people in need. Enthusiastic and energetic volunteers are always welcome, as they are the food bank’s backbone. They help sort, pack and distribute the donated food. If you want to give BFB a hand, you can help by distributing food rations across the country. More information on how to become a BFB volunteer can be found at the organization’s official website.
