A Bulgarian team came in eleventh in the 21st edition of the Harvard–MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT), held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in February 2018. Team members included students from three Bulgarian high schools, in Varna, Burgas, and Sofia. A total of 700 students competing in 90 teams took part in the 2018 tournament.
Participation in the competition is by invitation only, and this year three Bulgarian high schools received one. To ensure better performance, two of the schools, the Mathematics High School in Varna and the High School of Science and Mathematics in Burgas, joined forces in a common team, comprising three students from Burgas and four from Varna, with an additional participant from Sofia’s First Private Mathematics High School. The America for Bulgaria Foundation supported the joint team’s participation in the tournament.
HMMT is a highly competitive annual math tournament for high school students, run jointly by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. A small number of select international teams get invitations to take part, which makes the Bulgarian schools’ selection particularly noteworthy.
