In his long, productive life, Stefan Uvaliev lived in many places, often outside Bulgaria, and achieved success in many trades. However, his love for his country and support for the movement to establish a modern Bulgarian state never changed.
Stefan Uvaliev amassed a substantial fortune in commerce and farming, which allowed him to become a lifelong supporter of Bulgarian causes. He was an active participant in the drive to establish an independent Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Later, he funded the publication of literature in Bulgarian and was an early supporter of the predecessor to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He also funded the activities of the Bulgarian diaspora and helped many of his poor compatriots abroad.
Uvaliev never forgot his native Kalofer either: he financed the building of the town’s water supply system and established a scholarship fund for poor local students.
