The purpose of this grant is to build upon and enhance the capabilities of the Experimental Center on Integrated Control of Pest Diseases established at the Agricultural University – Plovdiv 3 years ago, and help it maintain the momentum gathered and become an autonomous, recognizable and well-respected structure to the University that will be able to generate revenues and operate independently in the long run. The Extension Service is aimed at promoting the benefits of integrated control on pest diseases (integrated pest management) and the advance of modern technology solutions for increasing production and profitability. In addition, beyond significant cost savings, the reduced use of chemicals from the application of modern integrated pest management methods (IPM) also has important environmental benefits. With the new proposal the Extension Service will: 1) Extend the list of crops, diseases and pests to be researched and addressed; 2) Purchase specialized equipment for the Experimental Field; 3) Expand the consulting team and improve communication with farmers and clients; 4) Deepen international collaborations with leading research institutions; 5) Continue to work for improvement of higher agronomic education in Bulgaria.
