Integration and Development of Electronic Herdbook Platform for Beef Breeds in Bulgaria

The purpose of this program is to support the Association of Beef Breeders in Bulgaria (ABBB) to introduce a sophisticated software system for storage and analysis of beef cattle data in Bulgaria for improving selection, breeding, veterinary and market information for the beef breeding industry in the country.

Тhe system will measure, compare and analyse the genetic and economic progress of beef herds both on an individual farm basis, and on a national level, at first for the 3 most economically important beef breeds in the country – Aberdeen Angus, Hereford and Limousin, and potentially – for others in the future.

The program provides for creation of a central and up to date national register for pedigree cattle and crosses with dominance of beef genetics, and measuring genetic growth through a range of economically important traits in accordance with the international industry standards. Тhe creation of a standardized data set compatible with international models for breeding assessment, which enables benchmarking and comparison of the national genetic progress in Bulgaria with that of other countries, is a major step which is expected to significantly contribute to the development of a modern beef breeding industry in the country.
