The National English Spelling Bee will be held for another three years with support from the America for Bulgaria Foundation. The program addresses two critical needs in Bulgaria’s education system: to provide equal access to quality English-language instruction and to make the study of English more attractive and exciting. Over the past seven years, the National English Spelling Bee has involved 25,000 students from 590 schools. The program engages children and teachers in a competition that brings excitement and motivation to the study of English, improves learning, and enhances teachers’ skills. Each year the competition takes place in three rounds: school, regional, and national. In each of the coming years, the program will support 250 local, ten regional, and one national Spelling Bee competitions, involving 6,500 students from 300 schools. The program will also include regional teacher-training seminars and one summer camp for the 30 competition finalists and their teachers.
