The requested grant will support the transformation of an old purification plant into an artisan center, locally known as the Purifier, in the village of Smilyan in the Rhodope Mountains. The center will offer a creative space for artists and craftsmen and help revive and sustain these professions by showing they can be sustainable income-generating activities for skilled people from local communities and offer worthy careers for the younger generation. The Purifier is an initiative of Radenko Velinov, a local master woodworker who learned the craft at some of the best furniture making studios in Scotland and who was inspired by Scottish craftsmen’s collaboration and mutual support through such artisan centers.
