Histories from Belene - using digital technology to preserve Belene concentration camp memories

The aim of the project is to deepen public knowledge of the Belene forced labor camp on Persin Island by creating an immersive digital experience. Using various forms of augmented reality (AR) and audio and video recordings of survivors will enable a new kind of connection to fading memories from the camp. Digital technology will provide a bridge for current and future generations to better understand their country’s recent history. The Sofia Platform Foundation and partnering organizations will design a semi self-guided tour with an app, booking website, and recorded interviews with five survivors of the Belene camp (testimonies will be displayed on panels in the camp’s last remaining buildings) as well as an update to the existing exhibition of survivor stories. In the meantime, Sofia Platform will continue organizing the annual summer schools on memory and democracy that it launched in 2018.
