Last summer, ABF awarded a grant to the “Budeshte” Foundation to conduct a summer camp designed to encourage multi-cultural dialogue and to prompt students studying in the Roma school to enroll in mainstream (mixed) schools. The NGO achieved a high level of success. The NGO is continuing its desegregation work, but is also using this grant to engage more actively in the Roma school. Though the majority of Roma children in Rakitovo study at this school, a very low number graduate from the 8th grade and even fewer enroll in high school. In order to increase participation and engagement in school, Budeshte will offer extracurricular activities, provide supplementary classes for children that are falling behind, and purchase school materials for 5th-8th graders.
