The grant provides for one-year fellowships with the Field Museum for two Bulgarian scholars in archeology or bio-archeology who will conduct their independent post-doctoral research which should result in major publications. The successful applicants in 2011 – 2012 academic year are Dr. Tzenka R. Tzanova who works on ‘Emergence of Cultural Modernity. Middle to Upper Paleolithic Transition in the Eastern Balkans: Neanderthal - Modern Human Cultural Transactions’ and Dr. Kroum N. Batchvarov with ‘The Kitten Shipwreck: Archaeology and Reconstruction of a Black Sea Merchantman’. The ABF supported postdoctoral fellowships program is jointly implemented by the Field Museum and the American Research Center in Sofia. It strengthens international collaboration between Bulgarian and American scholars in archeology and promotes use of ground breaking analytical techniques that advance the scientific study of the human past.
