This program is attempting to holistically address a number of critical barriers that typically impede a disadvantaged child’s educational progress. Activities will be conducted in Botevgrad and will be aimed toward increasing the participation and performance of disadvantaged children (with an emphasis on Roma) in school. The program first starts by looking at increasing the participation of children in kindergarten. The NGO established an “emergency fund” which will help a variety of families cover kindergarten fees. Assistance will be extended to 200 children on a rotating basis, in order to discourage dependence and to encourage buy-in from families. The program will also support attendance and participation at the elementary level by organizing a motivational festival for all Botevgrad schools in the spring. Keeping in mind that the 7th grade is one of the most critical turning points, and that the participation of Roma children in high school is still extremely low, the NGO will help prepare two hundred 7th and 8th graders for high school by providing educational materials and study sessions to prepare for their final and entry exams. Once they enter high school, children often receive little career counseling, and to address this challenge, the NGO will work with local businesses to create an apprenticeship program for 20 high schools students. And lastly, the NGO will close the circle by providing study sessions to 20, highly motivated Roma students to help prepare them for the university.

We are performing technical maintenance on our website and the project database will not be accessible until 4 pm today.
