The National English Spelling Bee continues for another three years with support from the America for Bulgaria Foundation. The program addresses two critical needs in Bulgaria’s education system: the need to provide more equal access to quality English-language instruction and to make the study of English more attractive and exciting. Over the past two years, the National English Spelling Bee has reached 420 schools and a total of 10,000 students. The program engages children and teachers in a competition, which has proven to bring excitement and motivation to the study of English, improve learning, and enhance teachers’ skills. Each year the competition takes place in three rounds: school, regional, and national. In each of the coming years, the program will support 250 local, 10 regional, and 1 national Spelling Bee competitions, which will involve 5,500 students from 250 schools per year. The program will also include regional teacher-training seminars and one summer camp for the 30 competition finalists and their teachers.
