The Night of Museums and Galleries in Plovdiv, organized by the Open Arts Foundation, was established in 2005. This two-night festival quickly gained popularity and from 3,000 visitors in the first year, more than 31,000 visited the event in 2015. The Night became a symbol of the modern and creative spirit of Plovdiv. The Night is also very important for Plovdiv from an economic point of view. A recent study of Industry Watch shows that for each dollar spent in the Night’s budget, four dollars are generated by the small businesses in town – restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels. Over 20% of the visitors of the Night travel to Plovdiv for the event from Sofia and the region which indicates how important the event is for the development of tourism. About 55% of all 31,000 visitors in 2015 are age 18-35 which means that one of the mail goals of the Night, to educate new audience, is valid. In 2016, the Night of the Museums and Galleries in Plovdiv will take place September 23-24.
