Bulgarian Donors in History: The Doctor from Tarnovo

Marin Rusev (1864–1935) was a Bulgarian physician and a public figure who significantly contributed to the development of the medical field in Bulgaria. His long career included chairmanship of Bulgaria’s Supreme Medical Council and legislative activity. Rusev initiated the fight against tuberculosis in Bulgaria, opening a sanatorium for chest-disease patients in Troyan in 1905 and a sanatorium for bone-and-joint tuberculosis patients near Varna in 1908. He was a personal physician to two Bulgarian tsars, Ferdinand and Boris III. He was actively involved in the work of the Bulgarian Medical Association and in the opening of Sofia University’s medical faculty, where “Bulgarian youth first started studying medical science in their mother tongue.” For his contribution, in 1930, Sofia University named him an honorary Doctor of Medicine. Rusev also established a prize fund for the best medical school graduates.
