You’d never guess – the international chocolatier of the year is Casa Kakau, a small family company in Plovdiv. They make real dark chocolate using the bean-to-bar technology. This company was among the finalists of the “New Successes,” a competition for startups organized by Local food.bg.
The road to success began in 2015, when the couple decided to make cocoa bean chocolate for their son, who suffers from a severe food allergy. The chocolate couldn’t contain milk or any other animal products, lecithin, gluten, preservatives and stabilizers. They were pleased with the result and shared the family recipe with others. Eventually, they started producing and selling the delectable treats.
Interestingly, their chocolate has only two ingredients – cocoa beans and cane sugar. They value quality highly and import the beans directly from a select number of farms in Ecuador. It’s the same with sugar – they choose only the best from a trusted source.
Today, Casa Kakau offers a wide selection of chocolate containing a variety of nuts and dried fruits without animal products. Their dark chocolate with cranberries is without doubt the icing on the cake. It brought the company the International Chocolatier Award of the Year in London. Further awards followed, including a gold medal at the international exhibition “Inter Food and Drink” in Sofia this fall.
Casa Kakau extended its product range and is now the first company in Bulgaria offering 100% dark hot chocolate, made only from cocoa beans and unrefined cane sugar. Their latest product is new even for Europe – tea from cocoa beans with different flavors for lovers of hot drinks. The products are available in health food shops, restaurants and cafes nationwide.
