Conserving Bulgaria’s Soils
University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev”

BGN 615,000

This project is aimed at establishing the first of its kind Soil Conservation Extension Program in Bulgaria, at the University of Ruse (RU). The objective of the program is to encourage adoption of soil conservation techniques for field crops (wheat, corn, barley, sunflower and rapeseed), which are not only conserving the soils but also have significant economic benefits for farmers. The concept of the project is to combine research and field trials with proactive communication of the findings and obtained results to a wider audience - producers, professional associations, and National and European authorities. The team envisages to start working with at least 15 farmers, spread within North-Central and North-Eastern Bulgaria (Ruse, Targovishte, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, and Dobrich regions), who will provide plots for field trials on the land they cultivate, where only soil conservation techniques recommended by the Extension Team will be applied. Later, researchers from the RU will make technical and economic evaluation of the effectiveness of the new techniques, compared to the results from plots where same crops are grown but following only classic/conventional agronomic practices. The project also envisages purchase of some specific mechanical and laboratory equipment needed for the soil conservation techniques, as well as a number of workshops and open-door days to provide for bigger outreach of the project results.

We are performing technical maintenance on our website and the project database will not be accessible until 4 pm today.
