Triumph for the Young Bulgarian Astronomers at the International Olympiad in Astronomy

The high achievement of the Bulgarian Astronomy Olympic team puts a grand finish to a successful Olympic season for Bulgarian national natural science teams! The team has won 4 medals and the absolute first place in the International Olympiad in Astronomy 2015!

This Olympic season the Bulgarian teams have brought home a total of 66 medals (9 gold, 31 silver, and 26 bronze) and 6 honorable certificates.

Bulgarian student Stefan Ivanov became the absolute winner of the Olympiad. Stefan is a ninth-grader at the Math and Natural Science High School in Burgas, and competed against teams from more than 50 other countries to reach this achievement. This is Stefan’s second high performance at the International Astronomy Olympiad, after he won a bronze medal last year.

The winner of a silver medal, ninth-grader Boyko Borisov from the Sofia Mathematics High School, is also a two-time medalist at the Olympiad, after he won a gold medal last year. Georgi Alexandrov, from Sofia Mathematics High School, also won the silver and Petar Dimitrov, from the National High School of Natural Sciences won the bronze medal for the Bulgarian team.

According to Eva Bozhurova and Johanna Kokotanekova, leaders of the Bulgarian team, “this is a historic performance for our country at this prestigious international competitions, because it is the first time a Bulgarian student has won the absolute first place. Bulgarian teams have been competing at the Olympiad since 1998 and have won a total of 14 gold medals.”

Since the beginning of the Olympic movement in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian natural science teams have won a 125 gold, 248 silver, and 330 bronze medals for the country.
