Sofia University Will Represent Bulgaria at the JESSUP International Finals in Washington

Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (JESSUP) is the largest and the best known international law competition in the world. It is a simulation of a fictional court dispute before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations and is organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA).

The Bulgarian teams have participated in almost every JESSUP edition since 1984. America for Bulgaria Foundation has supported the Bulgarian teams since 2010 and we’re glad to acknowledge a steady rise in their performance standings ever since. It has become a tradition for our students to get ahead of some of the most prestigious universities in the world such as Harvard and Yale.

In 2011, three of the members of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridsky” team won their place among top 100 speakers at the International Finals.

In 2013, the team of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridsky” achieved unprecedented success – 8th place in the final stage for written statements.

In 2014, the team of University for National and World Economy made a historic breakthrough and won the Hardy C. Dillard Award for Best Combined Statements of the National & Regional Rounds.

In 2016, Zlatina Gadzheva from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridsky” was ranked 24th in the Individual Oralists Table, which is the best achievement of any Bulgarian student in the competition.

This year the competition was very exciting between the four Bulgarian teams – University of Sofia, University of Plovdiv, University of Veliko Tarnovo and the American University in Blagoevgrad. The finals awarded Sofia University and Plovdiv University. Being the overall winner, Sofia University will represent Bulgaria at the upcoming JESSUP international finals in Washington. So, let’s chant together – “Go Bulgarian heroes!”
