Do bees speak English?

We don’t know if bees speak English, but sixth-grader Veselin Goranov from the Ivan Vazov 31st school in Sofia knows. He is his school’s champion in the first round of Spelling Bee 2017, the national English spelling competition. Vesko thrashed the competition when he flawlessly spelled out the word “playwright”.

You may wonder what the word “bee” is doing in the name of the competition. It’s not all clear – many think that people communicate with one another in a way similar to the interaction between bees. And just like them, conscientiously and carefully, more than 6,600 students from 304 schools from all across Bulgaria took part in the national competition between February 24 and March 2, 2017.

The best of them competed in the regional competitions on April 1 in eight towns around the country. Now 30 students will show off their skills at the national final on May 6 in Sofia. Among them will be chosen the Spelling Bee champion of Bulgaria. We’re already holding our breath, are you?

These are the names of the finalists: Viktoria Yordanova (Professor Emanuil Ivanov Natural Sciences and Mathematics School, Kyustendil), Antoaneta Bibishkova (Saints Kiril and Metodii Secondary School in the village of Marikostinovo), and Elena Buzukova (Yane Sandanski Natural Sciences and Mathematics School, Gotse Delchev).
