On transparency and other things we find important

One of ABF’s guiding principles and core values is to hold ourselves to the highest level of ethical standards which includes transparency and accountability in all that we do. This includes announcing our grants and grantee information on our website and providing ABF financial statements to the public. Full information about our organization, work, and funded projects can be found on our website at www.americaforbulgaria.org as well as in the public reports we deliver every year to the Register for Not-for-Profit Entities at the Ministry of Justice.

Operating since 2009, the ABF has funded over 600 projects worth more than USD 170 million and has partnered with Bulgarian state, municipal, and judicial institutions, non-governmental organization, social entrepreneurs and researchers, universities, schools, libraries, chitalishte, cinemas, theaters, operas, symphony orchestras, museums and galleries in over 200 cities and villages throughout Bulgaria. All this is continuously disclosed to the public since inception to date.

Unfortunately, transparency can be manipulated and used in inappropriate and irresponsible ways, particularly during politically charged times. As a $400 million foundation, which strives to assist Bulgaria in achieving its full potential as a modern European nation, we expect our high-profile status to bring not only approval but criticism. However, it is regretful when false and unfounded statements about the work of ABF are made in a manner that intentionally defames the name of the foundation and disparages its work, which is for the benefit of the Bulgarian people.

We have nothing to hide in our work and we are proud of the organizations we support and their success. We have always worked in a fully transparent way and by entirely lawful means, and despite of the malintent, we will continue to do so for the benefit of modern and democratic Bulgaria.
